Don't Play DFS...at least not with more than a couple of bucks. I've continued to play and I've discovered two reasons why I should stop (I've taken all my money out but $20).

1. The amount payed to the house is way to high at 20%
and new for 2016
2. It is nearly impossible to find actual players on the sites anymore. You are nearly always facing a computer.

Between the Legal Issue and the Playability issue, there is no room for the casual player. It's no longer a sucker bet, it's simply throwing your money away.

WHY ME?

If you are the sort of person who has watched any mainstream sporting events in the past two years, you have seen ads for Daily Fantasy Baseball.  I've seen them too.  And you might be the sort of person who decides "What the Hell, I'll give it a go."  Yep, that's me also.  And when you get there, you feel pretty confident in your knowledge of a particular sport and you step right up and lose, lose, lose.  Me, too.

I thought it might be a good idea for someone to put forth a resource for the beginner Daily Fantasy Player to come to to share ideas with.  When you open the doors, you are swimming alongside sharks.  I also wanted a place for me to formalize my ideas as to what works and what doesn't work for me.

I opened my account on Draft Kings to see if it could make Football more interesting to me.  I lost every tournament I joined pretty miserably and withdrew my money in disgust.  When opening day of baseball rolled around, I was emailed a matching funds offer, so I deposited $100 on April 9th.  I feel I know baseball better than 99% of the people in the world, so I thought if there was anything to it, I'd find it in the sport that's my passion.  In three weeks, I tried a lot of different ways to make the game work in my favor and played at least 500 matches.  My $100 dropped to $60 in the first week, but today I finish over $200 for the second time.  Doubling my cash in three weeks is pretty good.  This doesn't make me an expert.  I make a couple of truly glorious mistakes every week.  This webpage is my simple attempt to put forth an unadulterated view of what I am thinking and feeling about this game so that maybe someone might learn from it.  At the very minimum, I will force me to clarify the racing thoughts that trampoline around in my brain.

I have no extraordinary credentials to call myself an expert on the subject.  So I won't.  But the "experts" all started exactly where I am today.

On Baseball:
I've been an avid fantasy player for 2 decades, focused for the last ten years nearly exclusively on baseball.  I've played in several leagues each year and finished either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in every league I've played since the turn of the century, except for a really awful 2009 campaign.  I am also a diehard Chicago Cub fan, which has in recent years given me plenty of time to follow the many other fine teams in Major League Baseball.

On Wagering:
I was brought up understanding the principles of gambling the way many might learn to change the oil on their car, by my late father, who was a small time bookie.  I know how the house makes money and how they lure fish into the sea.  I also have played in 100's of Poker tournaments, and know that I am net up for my lifetime, because I've won several tournaments, including one big score, And I never entered a tournament that cost more than $100 out of pocket for me.  I am frugal, and I know you can win with small amounts.  Of course, your winnings will be smaller.

On Understanding the Auction Lineup System:
I've spent over a decade as a stockbroker, with four years focusing on Options trading. There are parts of the DFS world that are eerily similar to stock market trading.  I spent years studying Economics, and have become a sort of self taught Game Theorist, which is a division of my field, which really began after I graduated from college.

For these reasons, I feel I am excellently qualified to start a discussion about Daily Fantasy Sports.  I will focus on Baseball (I may do Basketball as the season comes around).  But I believe that more than half of what I talk about will apply to any sport.

So this is my reason for existence.  You can read if you want.  You can call me a moron if you want.  I would prefer you tell me I'm wrong when I'm wrong in a nice way, so I can learn from other peoples wisdom.  There will be times where someone changes my mind about things, and when I change my mind about things independently.  This is a work in progress: an attempt to get a real understanding of how Daily Fantasy works.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
